Field trip to the Wadden Sea

Building on the field trip in the summer of 2019, a team from Soil Chemistry returned to Northern Germany to sample the sediments of the Wadden Sea and Elbe estuary.

Our Wadden Sea field team comprising Joëlle, Giulia, Kurt, and Kath have recently returned from a second visit to the tidal flats along the Elbe Estuary, Northern Germany. This trip is part of the ERC Iron Mineral Dynamics in Soils and Sediments project. Despite some challenging weather, the team had a really enjoyable trip collecting bulk samples for future lab experiments and carrying out preliminary field experiments, which are to be continued next year.

The team are extremely grateful for kind assistance from the Nationalpark und Meeresschutz Schleswig-Holstein, the NABU-Group Wedel (in particular Uwe Helbing), and the Behörde für Umwelt und Energie der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg, who allowed access to our field sites. Wattboden (tidal flats) have been named as the external page German ‘Boden des Jahres’/soil of the year for 2020.
